The Boxer

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the remainders
Of every glove that laid him down
And cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
“I am leaving, I am leaving”
But the fighter still remains
Lie-la-lie . . .

– Paul Simon

Photographer’s note:  This man polished my boots here in Quito, Ecuador and asked for only one U.S. dollar.  His face told me that life had not treated too him kindly, and he reminded me of Paul Simon’s song The Boxer.  I asked him if I could take his photograph, and he seemed pleased—I tipped him two dollars (a small price to pay for such a photo) – SFD

Captured in CameraRAW with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II full-frame digital camera and Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM telephoto zoom lens.  I used my Canon Speedlite 430EX II for fill-flash (something I rarely do in my Street Photography).  The RAW image was converted in Adobe Camera RAW (ACR), and post-edits, including conversion to Black & White, were completed in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 (PSE11). I adjusted the black point and white point using levels, and paid special attention to the contrast and sharpness to enhance the “gritty” look I had envisioned—sort of the 1930’s American coal miner look.  A do-over:  I wish I had stopped my aperture down to f/5.6 or f/8 for greater depth of field (DOF), his eyes are tack-sharp, but his nose and chin area a little soft when viewed at 100% (I’m never satisfied) – SFD
