It always surprises me when my serendipity photography angel shows up. I opened my email this afternoon to find an inquiry from the Senior Photo Editor of a medical magazine looking for a photographer in Merida, Yucatan. They are doing a feature article about a Cuban doctor practicing medicine here in Merida and need a portrait and some environmental shots of his workplace. It’s a paid gig: a $300 usd daily rate plus expenses. So, yes, I’m interested.
Three years ago I was approached by a photo editor at The New York Times to shoot an assignment in Merida, but I was in Chiapas and couldn’t get back to Yucatan in time. Hopefully this time will be different. They are still ironing out some details and I am leaving Merida on March 22nd—but if I’m here when they finalize their plans it would be an interesting assignment. You never know when opportunity will present itself. I am not currently soliciting work but sometimes it just comes to you. Thank you serendipity angel.
